The Guards Red Porsche 911 GT3 with the black interior and red seatbelts is based in Los Angeles. This is the 911 built by the racing department, a 4.0 flat-six with no turbo that revs to 9,000, a wing, fixed-back bucket seats and nothing behind them. It's for the canyon morning and the driver who asks how it steers before how fast it goes. Guards Red is the colour everyone recognizes as Porsche. Delivery runs through Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
You sit lower in this one than in any Carrera. The carbon buckets are fixed-back shells, so you drop over a high bolster and the car closes around you, the red belt across your chest and a carpeted shelf behind. Then the twist switch on the left. The 4.0 flat-six catches with a bark and settles into a hard mechanical rattle at idle. That's normal. No turbo, 502 hp, mild below 4,500 rpm, then it pulls to 9,000 with a note that climbs from a metallic zing into a wail. The front end is double-wishbone, from the race car, so the steering fizzes in your hands in the first 50 feet. The PDK is instant on the paddles. Firm everywhere, loud on the freeway, alive on Mulholland Highway through the Snake at a pace the neighbours can live with.
Guards Red over black, on black wheels, with the swan-neck wing. Red is the GT3 colour that reads across a parking structure. In direct sun it goes flat and bright, so shoot with the sun low and let the shadow define the hips. In open shade it deepens to the poster red and the black wheels and wing stand off it cleanly. After dark it still reads red under street light where grey and black GT3s vanish. Take the rear straight on, low, so the wing spans the frame and the diffuser shows. Shoot the red belts across the black buckets close. In Los Angeles, a Downtown parking structure with the Bunker Hill towers behind it, late in the day.
We run 3 GT3s that aren't an RS. The grey one in Palm Springs is $1,295 and the black Touring in Los Angeles is $1,395 with no wing. This one is $1,195, the lowest rate of the 3, the only one in Guards Red, and the only winged GT3 in Los Angeles short of the RS Weissach at $1,795. If you want the car that looks like the racing department built it, the wing is the point, and red is the colour that gets a camera.
The GT3 is the motorsport-department 911. Standard on it is the 4.0 naturally aspirated flat-six with 502 hp and a 9,000 rpm redline, the double-wishbone front axle, the swan-neck rear wing, the front splitter and rear diffuser, centre-lock wheels and the rear seat delete. This one is Guards Red with black wheels. Inside it's black with suede-style trim on the dash, doors and steering wheel, carbon fibre full bucket seats with GT3 stitched into the headrests, red seatbelts, red contrast stitching and red accents on the floor mats. PDK automatic with the short lever and paddles, not the manual. 2 seats. Rear-wheel drive. 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds, 197 mph.
