Where People Take It

The Inland Empire drives are about elevation, not coastline. The Rim of the World Highway leaves the valley floor and climbs in under an hour to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear, pine forest and mountain air with overlooks across the whole basin. Ortega Highway crosses the Santa Ana Mountains from Lake Elsinore to the Orange County coast, two lanes of canyon that reward a car you can feel and punish anyone in a hurry. The 15 and the 60 are the spine that ties it together, and in the right car even those become part of the day.
